[Top 10] Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Best Armor To Upgrade

Link wishes he could air slash the Blood Moon with the Fierce Deity Armor.

[Top 10] Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Best Armor To Upgrade

How important is upgrading armor in the game?

It depends on whether you love a particular armor set and whether you want to invest the time to upgrade it! Many players have different preferences on which armor to upgrade, as other players still enjoy playing the game without upgrading armor. Upgrading armor will increase an armor's unique ability, unlock its special set bonus, and increase its defensive points.

Armors with the highest defensive points are made to protect Link's health meter from damage attacks. You can upgrade armor up to 4 times. After a 2'nd upgrade, Great Fairies activate the armor's set bonus for each piece of armor.

If it is your first time upgrading armor:

Start the Potential Princess Sightings Quest in the Lucky Clover Gazette. You'll naturally travel to the Woodland Stable and start a quest called Serenade to a Great Fairy. In this quest, you have to bring a violin musician to wake up the Great Fairy Tera close to the Woodland Stable. You can do this with a horse or with Zonai devices. She will provide all the locations of the other fairies. All these fairies can upgrade your armor.

10. Kakariko Stealth Armor

Link sneakstriking enemies!

Compared to other stealth armor in the game, Kakariko's Stealth Armor is the best to upgrade because it has the highest defense.. You can buy the full Kakariko Stealth Armor at Kakariko's Armor shop.

It is one of the most stylish armor because of Kakariko's symbolic eye design. When first acquired, it offers a stealth-up ability, meaning enemies are less likely to sense you lurking around, even if you're hiding in long grass! The set bonus offers a Night Speed-Up ability, making your hunts, stealth raids, or critter-catching worthwhile.

Reasons to Upgrade Kakariko Stealth Armor:

  • Upgrade the armor to increase the stealth-up ability. It will partially increase going undetected for longer without enemies or critters noticing you. If you value sneakstrikes over confrontation and want to take on enemies individually, upgrade your armor to do that a lot!

  • Get the set bonus! It's a Night-Speed Up ability, allowing Link to move faster at night when walking while crouching, making as little noise as possible.

  • Upgrade the armor if you're a huge critter enthusiast and love searching for items at night. If you value having lots of Blue Nightshade, Silent Shrooms, Sundelions, and Silent Princesses, upgrading the Stealth Armor is 100% worth it.

  • Upgrade this armor to upgrade other armor in the future! Many armor pieces require rare or common critters, so you may use the Stealth Armor more than you think. For example, the Barbarian Armor requires 3 Bladed Rhino Beetles to upgrade to 20 Defense points.

9. Rubber Armor

Lightning strikes during Link’s battle!

Rubber Armor is one of the most versatile armor pieces because it offers shock resistance. Sometimes, players run into shock enemies or areas with thunderstorms. You can find the armor pieces at Whistling Hill Cave, Horon Lagoon Cave, and Sarjon Woods Cave.

The weather in TOTK is just as bad as in BOTW, with rains and thunderstorms. The rubber armor helps counter the weather during Link's travels. When lightning strikes Link, the armor will only allow the lightning to deplete 1 heart and 3 quarts of another heart. The rubber armor will also allow Link to take on enemies with shock attack abilities.

Reasons to Upgrade Rubber Armor:

  • Become shock-proof! When upgraded twice, you unlock the shock-proof set bonus. This means that Link is immune to lightning.

  •  It will help traverse thunderstormy areas such as Faron, Hrule, and Gerudo.

  • Upgrade this armor if you are an enthusiastic electric monster killer! You value having lots of Lizalfos and Yellow Chuchu Jellys.

  • Upgrade this armor if you have a lot of Voltfrutis and Electric Saffinas. Save your shock-resistant meals and use the ingredients for a higher upgrade instead.

  • If you have many Topaz and don't know what to do with them, upgrading the rubber armor should be a no-brainer!

Armor Stats

  • It has a starting base of 9 defense points.
  • It raises shock resistance. When wearing armor, lightning depletes 1 heart and 3 quarts of another heart.
  • The set bonus is that it is Shock-proof.

How to find the Rubber Armor:

The chest is located at Whistling Hill Cave, guarded by an Electric Like-Like.

The tights are located at Horon Lagoon Cave. Destroy rock rubble to achieve it.

The helm is located at the Sarjon Woods Cave. The water stream in there will take you directly to the helm.

8. Climb Armor

Link climbs up Forge Island with little stamina!

The Climb Armor is one of the most essential armors to grab early in the game because it offers a climb speed-up ability. Get the pieces at North Hyrule Plains Cave, Upland Zorana Byroad Cave, and the Ploymus Mountain Cave.

The Climb Armor's speed-up ability allows Link to climb faster and efficiently. When upgraded to level 2 defense, stamina is reduced from jumping when climbing. It will be useful for climbing large heights and hanging onto the edges of sky islands!

Reasons to Upgrade Climb Armor:

  • Upgrade the armor to climb much faster than before! While the speed changes slightly after every upgrade, this perk will allow Link to climb great distances with minimal stamina.

  • The set bonus reduces stamina from jumping while climbing. While it's a straightforward set bonus, it will help you climb much faster, such as climbing up from a large sky island.

  • The highest upgrade offers 60 defense points! You would want this because severe falls can kill Link. This statistic can be useful because there is always a chance of falling from climbing. Depending on the height, with an armor of 60 Defense points and full health, Link can survive a fall in the estimated length of a Skyview Tower.

  • Upgrade this armor if you believe you're a partial monster hunter, master explorer, and love catching Hot-Footed Frogs! If you value having many Keese wings, Hightail Lizards, Hot-Footed Frogs, and Swift Violets, upgrading this armor should be easy.

Armor Stats

  • It has a starting base of 9 defense points.
  • It offers climbing speed.
  • The set bonus is reduced stamina from jumping when climbing.

7. Glide Armor

Link glides into the mist of the Korok Forest!

The Glide Armor is crucial in the game as it helps Link travel places by gliding in the air. When upgraded fully, it activates the impact-proof set bonus. The Glide Armor Pieces are located at Bravery Island, Courage Island, and Valor Island.

The Glide Armor has a special ability, a Skydive mobility-up, allowing Link to move more freely in the air to gain more distance. Often, it's used for gliding to areas you have never been to before and scoping the area's surroundings.

Reasons to Upgrade Glide Armor:

  • Unlock the impact-proof set bonus! This means that when Link falls, he doesn't take damage from it and dies. Yes, it's totally worth it!

  • The upgrade, at its maximum, offers 48 defense points. While it isn't meant for fighting, it will reduce the amount of hearts depleted from moderate damage.

  • After every upgrade, it will improve aerial control by trying to be more wind-resistant. This means that Link is in the air longer and has less time to fall when gliding. This detail is very subtle to notice.

  • Upgrade this armor if you love the caves as much as the sky! It will take many Keese and Aerocuda monster parts to upgrade the armor.

  • Upgrade this armor if you're also a huge Gleeok hunter! If fighting Gibdo's is part of your combat resume, upgrading the Glide armor should be a breeze.

Armor Stats

  • It has a starting base of 6 defense points.
  • The set bonus is no fall damage.
  • To upgrade to level 16 defense (highest), obtain 500 rupees, 12 Gleeok wings, 10 Aerocuda wings, and 8 Gibdo wings.

6. Champion’s Leathers

Link tries out the Champion’s Leather’s abilities!

The Champion's Leathers is a must-have for all fans, and it just comes with a chest piece. The side quest, a New Champions Tunic, starts the journey to find the armor. It's in a hidden treasure chest in the Sanctum in Hyrule Castle.

The armor doesn't offer the same bonus in Breath of the Wild, showing an enemy's health meter In TOTK, when wearing the armor, you can activate the Master Sword's beam anytime, even with low health. It's incredibly versatile because you can wear boots and a mask with an attack-up ability. It looks stellar with the Fierce Deity mask and boots.

Reasons to Upgrade Champion’s Leathers:

  • The Champion's Leather alone maxes out at 32 defense points. While that's a small defense for such powerful armor, it's meant to be combined with other fully upgraded armor pieces. For example, a fully upgraded Fierce Deity mask and boots create 72 defense points with the Champions Leathers. The Master Sword's beam exerts more damage when equipped with attack-up armor pieces.

  • Upgrade this armor If you love the Master Sword and use it constantly. You truly believe in the Master Sword, quite literally.

  • Upgrade this armor if you love re-visiting the Light Dragon and farming lots of Light Dragon parts. If you value having lots of Silent Princesses and Sundelions, this armor is worth upgrading!

Armor Stats

  • It starts with a base of 5 defense points.
  • Its special ability allows Link to use the Master Sword's beams even when he has low health. No upgrade is needed for this ability.

How to get the Champion’s Leathers:

Read Zelda’s Diary in Zelda’s Secret Well by her house in Hateno Village. It starts the Champion’s Tunic side quest.

Fast travel to Lookout Landing’s Skyview Tower. Glide into the Sanctum’s throne room and light up these torches. A brief cutscene will reveal where it is. I marked it with a Brightbloom Seed.

5. Depths Armor

Link gets into a tough fight against an Obsidian Frox!

The Depths Armor is the best armor to navigate the depths because it offers gloom resistance! You buy the armor from Bargainer Statues with the exchange of poes after finding your 2'nd, 4'th, and 6'th Bargainer statues.

The Depths Armor is the best defensive armor for dealing with gloom! There are many gloom-based enemies in the depths and some that are on the surface, and because of that, the armor offers gloom-resistance and a gloom attack-resistance as a set bonus. The awesome thing is that when the gloom-resistance hearts deplete, they automatically regenerate over time.

Reasons to Upgrade Depths Armor:

  • While the armor isn't gloom-proof, upgrading it will make Link withstand walking on gloom a little longer. It will still take away the gloom-resistance hearts protecting you.

  • The set bonus is a gloom-attack resistance! It means Link can withstand gloom-based attacks such as from Gloom-Hands. The set bonus gives you an extra gloom-resistance heart.

  • Upgrade this armor if you are a fan of exploring the Depths and believe you are a Frox killing machine! You also love forging lots of Zonaite and collecting all the weird Depth items such as Dark Clumps and Deep Fireflies.

  • Upgrade this armor way before facing Ganondorf. There’s lots of annoying gloom during the first phase of the fight.

Armor Stats

  • It has a starting base of 9 defense points.
  • It Offers Gloom Resistance. Each piece of armor gives additional gloom hearts, 3 total.
  • The set bonus is a 4'th gloom resistance heart and a gloom-attack resist ability.

Wellspring of Wisdom Bargainer Statue. Fast travel to the Usakaz Lightroot if you can, and glide down to the Wellspring of Wisdom. You can also descend from Naydra’s Snowfield Chasm.

Wellspring of Power Bargainer Statue. Fast travel to the Akinatanis Lightroot if you can. It’s southeast of the Bargainer Statue. The Bargainer Statue is directly next to the spring.

Wellspring of Courage Bargainer Statue. It’s most likely you’ll reach the Construct Factory last, where you finish a main quest called Guidance of Ages Past and encounter the Spirit Temple. BEFORE you attempt the temple and reach the boss, go to this Bargainer Statue and have more than 300 Poes ready to buy the full Depths armor.

4. Barbarian Armor

Link knocks down a Battle Talus!

The Barbarian Armor is one of the best combat armors because it offers an attack-up ability. The pieces are located at Crenel Hills Cave, Robert Dropoff Cave, and Walnot Mountain Cave.

It grants Link an attack-up ability and boosts Link's damage by 50% for all weapons. This attack-up doesn't apply to charged attacks because of the set bonus. It's one of the toughest armor pieces to upgrade because you have to face Lynels! The Barbarian Armor and the Fierce Deity Armor are the best attack-up armor in the game and share the same defense statistics.

Reason to Upgrade the Barbarian Armor:

  • The armor has a neat set bonus. To activate it, you must upgrade it twice for every piece of armor. It reduces stamina when performing a charged attack.

  • Strong enemies await, and attack-up armor is extremely valuable! By upgrading it, you can defeat even the most formidable monsters, such as the Gleeoks and Lynels of every type. Facing the main bosses will become less of a pain.

  • The maximum upgrade is defense level 60! What's nice is that the armor will help partially deplete the hearts lost from extremely high damage.

  • Upgrade the Barbarian Armor if you are an expert Lynel hunter and love making Razorclaw Crab meals! If you don't mind searching for rare items like 3 Bladed Rhino Beetles, go for it.

Armor Stats

  • It has a starting base of 9 defense points.
  • It grants an attack up.
  • The set bonus is a charged attack stamina up, reducing stamina to perform a charged attack.

3. Zonai Armor

Link uses a Zonai Wing to make it to Eventide Island!

The Zonai Armor is one of the best armor to upgrade because it helps run Zonai devices more efficiently. You can find the armor pieces at Zonaite Forge Island, Lightcast Island, and the Sky Mine.

The armor offers an energy-up ability, which improves Zonai energy efficiency. For example, with the full armor set, the energy cell battery decreases slowly. The set bonus, Energy Recharge Up, means that the Zonaite energy recharges twice as fast! So make lots of Zonai devices and use them while you wear this armor!

Reason to Upgrade Zonai Armor

  • Upgrade this armor once you've maximized your energy cells to 16 complete cells!

  • The energy-up ability allows Zonai devices to function much faster with a larger input. However, this ability doesn't help the output for recharging.

  • The set bonus offers energy recharge. When using Zonai devices for a certain amount of time, the energy cool-off is brief, and you can use the device in a few seconds. Without the upgrade, when fully depleting 16 energy cells, you have to wait about 23 seconds for the energy cells to recharge. It would be nice to make that less!

  • Upgrade this armor if you deeply enjoy taking down enemy constructs and love spending so much time making the most innovative Zonai devices. If you only enjoy fighting while on Zonai devices, then upgrading this armor is 100% for you!

Armor Stats

  • It has a starting base of 12 defense points!
  • It has an energy-up ability, improving energy efficiency using Zonai devices.
  • The set bonus offers Energy Recharge Up.

2. Fierce Deity Armor

Link takes a selfie with Gloom Hands.

The Fierce Deity Armor is one of the best aggressive armor in the game because it offers an attack-up ability. Fierce Deity is one of the most beloved and iconic Link outfits, and it is a must-have for older Zelda fans to experience TOTK. After discovering Cephla Lake Cave, which unlocks Misko's quest for the Fierce Deity, go to the Ancient Tree Stump Cave, Akkala Citadel Ruins, and Skull Lake Cave.

The armor grants an attack-up ability, making Link stronger in battle. The set bonus is a charged attack stamina up, which reduces the amount of stamina to perform a charged attack. The Barbarian Armor and the Fierce Deity Armor are the best attack-up armor in the game and share the same defense statistics. However, after achieving all the pieces of the Fierce Deity Armor, players can get the Fierce Deity Sword in Cephla Lake Cave!

Reason to Upgrade the Fierce Deity Armor

  • The armor grants an attack-up ability. You can face almighty enemies such as King Gleeok, Blue-Maned Lynels, Froxes, and the Demon King himself.

  • The armor has a neat set bonus. To activate it, you must upgrade it twice for every piece of armor. It reduces stamina when performing a charged attack.

  • The maximum upgrade is defense level 60! What's nice is that the armor will help partially deplete the hearts lost from extremely high damage.

  • Upgrade the Fierce Deity if you are a part-time monster hunter but enjoy tacking down the Triforce dragons the most. Dragon farming is easier but takes longer than fighting Hinoxes and Lynels. It depends on how willing you are to wait for the dragons to recharge for every scale, claw, fang, and horn you receive.

Armor stats:

  • It has a starting base of 9 defense points.
  • It has an attack-up ability.

1. Ancient Heroes Aspect

Link, I told you not to wear that at my birthday party! You’re embarrassing me!

Ancient Heroes Aspect is the best defensive armor in the game because it has the highest defense, up to 84 defense points! After finding all 152 shrines, visit the Temple of Time on Great Sky Island. The temple will reward you.

The Ancient Heroes Aspect Armor rivals the Zonaite Armor and the Evil Spirit Armor because they all start with 12 defense points total. The Ancient Heroe's Aspect Armor directly rivals the Soldier's Greaves Armor, sharing 84 defense points. The Ancient Heroes Aspect is better because it offers a set bonus, Master Sword Beam Up ability, and has an original design to TOTK's story.

Reason to Upgrade Ancient Heroes Aspect Armor:

  • When worn and upgraded twice, it will increase the Master Sword's beam's range. No more wasting arrows, and you can finally feel like a legend throwing beams of light at the Demon King from further away!

  • With such wild defense, you can withstand damage up to 84, which is merely equal to the Demon King's attacks! Essentially, you should use this armor to defeat the Demon King. It will help conserve hearts when being attacked by so many brutal hits.

  • You should upgrade this armor if you love to boast about all the monsters you defeated and the monster parts you acquired. You're a freaking powerhouse, and taking down Silver-type monsters, Hinoxes, Froxes, Moldugas, Lynels, and Gleeoks feels like you're having your first cup of coffee in the morning.
