You wouldn’t necessarily need a shield in Elden Ring but it’s always better to have one. Elden Ring also has some of the best greatshields, with me using quite a few in different playthroughs. This list will be of great use for anyone looking for a few amazing greatshields. With some of these shields having their own special weapon arts, you can do a shield-only run, albeit quite hard. This top 5 list will also help my fellow greatshield users find one of the best shields if not the best shield in the game. 

5. Golden Greatshield

The Golden Greatshield is a beautiful and strong shield, with requirements of 34 strength you will be blocking and guard countering enemies easily.

Why the Golden Greatshield is great:

• Can be infused with Ashes of War.
• Can be buffed with magic and consumables.

How to get the Golden Greatshield:

• Can drop from Leyndell Knights wielding this weapon.
• Knights can be found in Leyndell Royal Capital.

4. Jellyfish Shield

Spongebob would be proud.

The Jellyfish Shield is a fun shield that also has a good weapon skill. With the requirements of 20 strength and 14 dex, this shield can be used and found quite early on.

• Why the Jellyfish Shield is great:
• Weapon skill buffs damage for 30 seconds (20%)
• Low requirements.

How to get the Jellyfish shield:

• Go to the Foothill of the Four Belfries Grace.
• Run towards the four jellyfish.
• It will be on a corpse.

3. Haligtree Crest Greatshield

Have you vowed to serve Miquella’s Tree?

The Haligtree Crest is a beautiful greatshield with the requirements of 36 strength. This shield is carried by the Haligtree soldiers, so you will be able to get this shield very late game.

Why the Haligtree Crest Greatshield is great:

• Can be infused with Ashes of War.
• Can be buffed with magic and consumables.
• Great stats.

How to get the Haligtree Crest Shield:

• Go to Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree.
• Go to the graveyard at the bottom, by the church.
• Only the Haligtree Knights wielding a greatsword and shield can drop this shield.

2. Erdtree Greatshield

Tree Sentinels Shield of choice.

The Erdtree Greatshield, is a beautiful and strong shield. With the requirements of 30 strength and 12 faith, you will be transformed into a Tree Sentinel. 

Why the Erdtree Greatshield is great:

• Amazing weapon skill, ready the shield and it will dispel the oncoming incantation or sorcery. Sending back a blast of Golden Power.
• Great stats.

How to get the Erdtree Greatshield:

• Go to Altus Plateau.
• Before the Outer Wall Phantom Tree Grace.
• Defeat the two Tree Sentinels.
• The shield will drop after the last one is defeated.

1. Fingerprint Greatshield

Become the Lord of Frenzied Flame!

The Fingerprint Greatshield is the best shield in the game. With amazing stats and requirements of 48 strength. This shield pairs well with the fingerprints on your back when you go for the Frenzied Flame ending.

Why the Fingerprint Greatshield is great:

• Great weapon skill.
• Wielding two will turn you into “the Wall’.
• Causes Madness to build up.

How to get the Fingerprint Greatshield:

• Defeat Margott, The Omen King.
• Go to the Cathedral of the Forsaken.
• Defeat Mohg, the Omen.
• Roll into the invisible wall at the back.
• Drop down from gravestone to gravestone till you get to the corpse.
• Enter the alcove and head down the corridor, the shield will be next to a nomad. 
• You can also use this nomad to attack the environment for another item.
